Vanderbilt University - BA, Mathematics
Certain subjects can create stifling environments for many students in a school setting, and it is up to tutors to transform that environment from one of stress and discouragement into one of excitement and freedom. I am currently enrolled at Vanderbilt University, majoring in Mathematics and minoring in Computer Science. I am definitely a math enthusiast. I have spent much of my time as a tutor teaching mathematics skills through the university's Learning Center and through various volunteer initiatives. A few of my other specialties are tutoring literacy and music, and I am especially proficient at helping prepare students for the SAT. I believe the reason so many students struggle with mathematics concepts is because of the manner in which they are taught in classroom settings. Although many school teachers are very skilled, there is much room for growth beyond certain archaic and outdated teaching methods many students experience at school. I try to bring my own imaginative techniques to the table when teaching mathematics. The SAT is another area students also tend to have difficulty with, often dreading its arrival and stressing out about the test. I view the structure of the SAT as a code, as its structure is predictable and has certain patterns. Through my own desire to score highly on this test in the past, I believe I have cracked that code, and I'm happy to pass along this knowledge to my students.
